Sneaky Toast - Post-Mortem


The game was made for PB Game Jam 4 with the theme "Sneaky". The game is a toast stealth platformer. 

Story:

The player is the toast. His goal is to reach to the other side in order to serve himself to the customers. However, there are germs which are going to kill him if collided or touched. The toast has the ability to hide himself in a box, unseen by the germs. If the germs spotted the player and the player hides however, it is utterly useless because the germs know where the player is, just like in real life. Around the platform, there are magical floating toppings which can improve the quality of your taste and aesthetics. But don't forget that the toast itself can ruin its own quality. Why? Because when you leave a toast on an open field for a long period of time, he won't be crispy anymore. Who likes soft toast anyway?

Aesthetics:

The game is a simple retro style pixel art aesthetics.  Most of the sprites are made by 32 x 32 resolution, but the background has a different resolution. The germs are just a green square with big angry eyes while the player is a toast. A cute toast. 

Mechanics:

The player can move left and right using A and D, jumping using space, and climbing ladders up and down with W and S.  If the player wants to see the layout of the game, you can hold backspace. The objective of the game is to land on a plate, therefore ready to be served to the customer. The player can hide just by pressing shift and reveal itself by pressing shift again. Although the player can hide himself from the germs, the player can't move when he is hidden. So if the player hides, he is stuck like a statue. But remember that the hiding mechanic is almost like in real life. If you hide when you were spotted, then it's useless. You can differentiate the germs spotting you and not is by its speed. If the player doesn't spot you, then his speed is lower than the player's. But if spotted, then its speed is faster. The game ends by either the player got touched by the germ or falling of the map which is an instant game over and the player has to restart all over again, or by reaching the end and getting a star score rating from 1 to 5 stars. 

Technology:

The game is made using Construct 2, art made by Aseprite and Photoshop, music made by Bosca Ceoil, and sound effects made by Bfxr and real life recording.

The Pros:

The game background and its cloud set up a good mood of the level. The player's challenge is to think on whether to hide or not to hide, playing risky or safety, or take it slow or gotta go fast, which is a good concept for a stealth game. The game has the ability to change game theme, either light or dark (just like in most websites), which also changes the game background.

The Cons:

There was a minor bug issue when the player received the butter, peanut butter, and jelly. The game's menu doesn't have any background music and just plain boring menu. There is only one level, which made the game a bit boring and repetition upon reaching the goal.
