Post Mortem - Cardbot

This is a post-mortem of the game that I have just made called Cardbot, a platformer x card x strategy game where you guide the robot using cards controlling it moving while being careful not letting the robot dead.

The idea

I was thinking of a game genre using a website, http://letsmakeagame.net/game-genre-generator/, just to make it easier. I found a genre called "Card game X Robot programming". I thought, maybe I could make a platformer robot game using cards where the player control the robots and come up with a strategy on how to get to the teleporter. And so the game was in development.

The Arts

I didn't have anyone else working with me for making the arts. I made the card's layout, the card types, even the block of the platform and the jumpthru platform. However, I can't do advanced animation, so I borrowed one from minty-diamond who made a royalty free robot animation. I'm not a man of arts, but a man of programming. So I'm not too detailed or too complex making the art.

The Sound and Music

I asked someone to make the music while I deal with the sound design. The music was simple but easy, still retro. For the sound effects, I use Bfxr to mix several sound effects and make them a new one. I think it fits and it really gives a notice to the player on what they did.

The game mechanic

The randomness is annoying as hell. I didn't have time to modify the card randomness, which is something I have to look up to for the next update. Some people say that the jump isn't good because they have to time it right. And the randomness of the card spawn is also annoying as some of them can overlap too much, they accidentally take the wrong card.

The levels

I'm not a good level designer for platformer games. So I might have to fix it. There are only 4 levels, so I'm probably going to build more levels soon in the future.

48 hour game jams aren't something I'm used to since I mostly make games more than that. So I'll probably patch it up. In the mean time, this would be a prototype for a better game.
